The dillemmas in ESG: animal welfare

Here's a tough one: caged animals are more #emission efficient than free-roaming ones. đŸ„

Why? Efficiency. Manure management, feed efficiency, energy consumption, etc. All driven by cost efficiency but also resulting in CO2 efficiency.

As companies optimize for sustainability, we need to be hyper careful of this tunnel vision on reducing emissions. #Sustainability stretches many aspects like in this case #animalwelfare, and we need to be aware that zeroing in on one parameter might disregard another.

The solution? Holistic evaluation and materiality mapping of suppliers - not focusing on scope 3 and disregarding everything else. It's complicated yes, but also, there are solutions that takes that complexity away from you, so it's not an excuse.

If you're curious about this trade-off, check out another post I wrote about how an emission focus with farmers can increase the risk of #forcedlabor - see similar posts.

Also, one of many sources for the dilemma in the context of chicken farming and check out the book "How the World Really Works" for a provocative but real deep-dive on different sectors and a skeptical view on reaching our decarbonization targets.
