#Sustainability isn’t just about creating sustainable options. It’s about offering customers the best option that also happens to be more sustainable.
Car sharing is one of those products.
In 2021 I had my son Noah and we needed a car living in Copenhagen. We started using the car sharing scheme SHARE NOW.
Since then we’ve gone on 84 car trips (circa 2.8 trips per month), driving a total of 11.3k km.
Here’s how that usage worked out for us financially and environmentally 👇
💸 Car sharing cost: €9600 (€320/month including gas/electricity and insurance).
VS #leasing a car: in Denmark leasing costs between €200-550/month. The comparable car to ShareNow (BMW i3) is about €400 >> 40% cost saving.
VS #buying a car: That same BMW i3 taking into account factors like standard resell value, financing, maintenance, etc. will cost around €340/month >> 30% cost saving.
💚 Car sharing environmental impact (less straightforward to breakdown…):
Let’s say a car costs between 6-35 tonnes of CO2 to produce.
1 car “share” removes 8 regular cars from the roads (according to a Capgemini report on the sustainability impact of car sharing).
That’s an 87.5% reduction in emissions from car production.

You can dynamically pick a car for what you actually need. Small, big, electric or gas, you can choose the perfect car for your journey.
Free and easy parking most places in Copenhagen.
No time spent fuelling, repairing, washing etc…
🤔 Downsides:
Having to bike 2-10 min to get to the nearest car and not being able to park it under our apartment. A bit of a hassle bur arguably that time is made up by not fuelling, repairing etc..
TL;DR of car sharing vs car owning:
For anyone in a city, car sharing can be the more economically viable, convenient and sustainable option.
ShareNow is an example of a company offering a great product and convenience as well as being the more sustainable option.
