Prioritising supplier sustainability engagement

Two conflicting thoughts on how to prioritize #sustainability initiatives amongst your hundreds/thousands of #suppliers. You probably need to do both.

On one hand, I'm ex-BCG, so I'm a strong advocate of 80/20 and focusing on specific projects of change where it delivers the most impact - e.g. reduce emissions from top x suppliers by y%.

On the other hand, I'm a big believer in the bargaining power of buyers, and the cumulative impact it can have when everyone puts sustainability on the scorecard for every supplier.

You push awareness. You start discussions. You make companies know that their investments in sustainability matter and are recognized. There are compounding effects as different buyers push the same suppliers. Some suppliers take inspiration and start pushing it in their own supply chain. Discussions continue in industry forums and with peers.

☝️This is how movements are created - not by restricting action to an “elite few” selection of suppliers who are probably already hyper aware, but by ensuring every supplier knows they get evaluated on their sustainability results.

80/20 maximizes results with minimal input.

But a thousand small streams creates a thundering river. A movement.

I say we start a movement 🔥

What do you think?
