Getting suppliers to commit to reducing emissions

Should you require your #SME #suppliers to set #SBTi targets (emission reduction targets)?

I got a taste of my own medicine the other day when I had to explain why Responsibly is not currently planning on committing to Science Based Targets initiative.

My answer was that our footprint simply was too small still to justify the effort. But reflecting on it, I derived at a different conclusion.

When you're building a high growth company (not all SMEs are high growth ofc), your footprint will increase hundredfold as your business increases hundredfold. So whereas established companies have established processes they should be looking at reducing, or job is to build in a sustainable way, so as we grow, we grow on a highly emissions efficient foundation.

An example in the software industry is that your biggest footprint is likely your computing needs and emissions from that. So it's really important you design for the cloud, as cloud computing is much more efficient and can have an 80% lower footprint than local servers. It's also important you work with cloud providers who work hard on improving the energy efficiency of their solutions, and co-locate data centers next to renewable energy sources. Luckily most providers do that as it's simply the cost imperative, and we're very happy to work with Amazon Web Services (AWS) on this.
